What You Actually Need in Place Before You Launch a Business
Starting a business is exciting, but it's also easy to get stuck — either doing too much before you're ready to launch, or launching without the basics that make a business look and run professionally. Here's a practical breakdown of what genuinely needs to be sorted early on, and what can wait.
1. Branding & VISION
Your branding is more than a logo. Before launch, you need:
A logo and consistent visual identity (colours, fonts, imagery style)
A clear idea of your brand voice — how you sound in your marketing, emails, and website copy
Consistency across every touchpoint, so your business looks like one cohesive thing, not five different projects stitched together
This doesn't need to be perfect or expensive at the start, but it does need to be consistent. Inconsistent branding is one of the fastest ways to make a new business look unprofessional.
Stalk other brands. Create a pinterest board - Yes its cheesy but its nessesary, Trust me! it helps. Create a board of what you want your business to look and feel like. Sqve every image that you resonate with and want your business to look like.
This can take days but over time your branding, look, feel and colourscheme will become coherant and clear. Then you can use this as your guide when creating you logo and website designUse Canva and select multiple templates you like - then identify what you like about each template - pull it apart and steal elements from each one. Again this can take time to create.
Creation cant be rush.
I DONT recommend using AI to create your logo - becuase it will limit your editing and also the quality of the image.
I do recommend using it for inspiration.
2. A website
Even a simple one. I recommend Squarespace because of its aesthetic template and user friendly interface - All my clients personally love it.
Your website is usually the first place a potential customer goes to check you're legitimate, before they call, email, or buy. At minimum, it needs to clearly answer:
What do you do?
Who is it for?
How do people get in touch or buy?
A slow, complicated, months-long website build is one of the most common things that delays a launch. It doesn't need to be complicated to be effective.

3. Marketing basics
You don't need a full marketing strategy on day one, but you do need:
Start getting content of your work now! Its never too soon or late. This boosts your chances of being found Posting content across your website, google business, social media etc.
A plan for how people will actually find out you exist (Google Maps, social media is the first and easier option, local networking, pair up with local businesses, referrals, collaborations, word of mouth, ads — pick what suits your business)
Consistent business information across every platform (name, contact details, hours)
A simple way to track what's working, even if it's just noting where enquiries come from
4. Systems
This is the one most new business owners skip, and it usually costs them later. Before you launch, have a basic system in place for:
How enquiries and bookings come in and get responded to
How you invoice and get paid
How you store client or customer information
How you follow up past clients
Request Reviews
These don't need to be fancy. A well-set-up simple system saves you admin time and makes the customer experience nicer and more memorable.
5. Admin and compliance
The unglamorous but essential part:
ABN and business registration sorted
Business bank account separate from personal
Understanding of what needs to be recorded for tax purposes
Any licences or insurance relevant to your industry
Invoicing/tax system such as Hnry
Seperate Bank account purely for business expenses/income
Getting this right early saves a lot of stress later, particularly at tax time.
The order matters less than you think
A lot of new business owners get stuck trying to do everything perfectly in sequence. In reality, branding, website, marketing, systems, and admin can — and often should — happen alongside each other, not one after the other.
Getting it all set up without doing it alone
This is exactly what Tia Maria Business by Design helps women (and men) with — branding, marketing, systems, admin, and a professional website, so you're not trying to figure it all out solo or hire five different people to get started. Based on the Gold Coast, working with startups and small businesses across Australia.
